Spot Removal Steps from Chem-Dry of Madison
1. Act Quickly Many carpets have stain-resist treatments, and responding promptly to spills may help improve cleanup results. The longer a spill remains on the carpet, the more difficult it may be to address. Results can vary based on the carpet fiber, spill type, carpet age, and previous cleaning attempts.
2. Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or white paper towel with no printing.
3. Do not scrub the area. Scrubbing may affect the carpet pile or spread the spill. Continue blotting with a dry cloth or paper towel. For semi-solids, gently lift the material with a rounded spoon. Solids can be broken up and vacuumed. If the spot can be identified, follow the care directions for that type of spill and carpet.
4. Pretest any spot removal product in an inconspicuous area before use. Apply a small amount to the test area, then hold a white cloth on the damp spot for 10 seconds. Check the carpet and cloth for color transfer, color change, or other visible changes. If a change occurs, stop using that product and consider another option.
5. Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth and work gently.
6. Work from the edges of the spill toward the center to help limit spreading. Do not scrub. Blot to absorb as much of the spill as possible. Repeat as needed.
7. Continue using the first cleaning solution only while the spill is transferring to the cloth. It may not be necessary to use additional cleaning solutions.
8. Be patient. Some spots may require repeating the same step several times. Do not move to the next step until you have removed as much of the spot as possible.
9. Rinse the affected area with cold water, then blot with a dry cloth to help remove remaining cleaning solution. Leftover cleaning solution may attract soil depending on the product used.
10. Apply a layer of white paper towels to the affected area and weigh it down with a flat, heavy object. Change paper towels as needed while the area dries.
